If you know of a senior in your family or you are reaching the age where your independence is hindered by age then you absolutely must consider your safety first and the safety of those you love with medical alert equipments.

Medical Alert Services for senior citizens and anyone who may have a medical condition started to become popular in the 1980s. The equipment they used started out as a basic receiver with a pendant worn around the neck or wrist with a button attached to it. A simple push of this button would send out a signal to the receiver in the bearer's home, the base receiver would than contact 911 emergency services. There are many cases each year where an elderly person slips in the shower or going up or down stairs. What could be a bruised knee for someone of generation X, could turn into broken bones and a medical emergency for someone who is elderly. Having 911 a push of a button away, in case one could not make it to the telephone could be the difference between life and death.

In the past few decades, the equipment used in medical alert systems has become more advanced, as technology allows for greater improvements in the equipment. Medical alert systems started as being an in-home solution to medical emergencies. Radio frequencies have become stronger, allowing for home base stations to give off a stronger signal, resulting in extended range from the unit itself. Users have more freedom and range away from their home base station than ever before. With the advancement of technology, out of home protection is now available. Almost every cell phone these days has a GPS Signal Radio located in it. Medical alert services can now use the GPS in your phone to locate someone in a medical emergency once a distress call is made. A person can now use an application on any smartphone to alert 911 with the push of a button. Sometimes in an emergency, a person cannot physically dial 911 to talk to emergency services. For those who need it, extending emergency medical services to smart phones to locate someone in need via GPS is can literally be a life saver. Medical alert systems rely heavily upon electronic technology. As we become more integrated with smart phones and hand held devices, services such as medical alert systems will be forced to adapt and keep up with growing technology.
